You’ll be writing for an audience of journalists, so at the forefront of the skills requirements for the job is exceptional writing abilities. Bonus points if you know AP style. This is a high volume, deadline-oriented environment where we are juggling competing priorities and multiple internal and external customer relationships. The successful candidate will know how to thrive in this setting. Each year, Poynter’s marketing and communications team supports more than 50 in-person teaching events, nearly a dozen community conversations and fundraising events and upwards of a hundred e-learning teaching events. To support enrollment and registration for these events, we employ email, content marketing and social media campaigns. We use a powerful marketing automation tool (Pardot) and rely on Google Analytics to track conversion and measure success.
Additional requirements include 3-5 years of email marketing and marketing/promotions experience. Strong writing, communication, analytical, time management, planning and relationship skills are a must. Basic knowledge of coding is a plus. Preference will be given to candidates with experience with Salesforce, Pardot and Drupal.

TITLE: Marketing Communications Writer
DEPARTMENT: Advertising and Marketing Department

REPORTS TO: Director of Advertising and Marketing
OVERALL JOB RESPONSIBILITY
The Marketing Communications Writer works with Poynter’s teaching team, event services staff and colleagues in the Advancement Department to tell the story of the Poynter Institute and drive revenue. This position plans, carries out and analyzes the results of all email marketing efforts to promote Poynter teaching and events. The Marketing Communications Writer also writes for Poynter’s website, creating promotional copy to sell Poynter teaching and to tell the stories of the transformational impact of that teaching. By writing powerful, persuasive copy, the Marketing Communications Writer inspires journalists, educators, students and others to rely on Poynter as a resource throughout their careers, encourages companies to hire Poynter for training, inspires individuals to support Poynter with contributions, and keeps all stakeholders informed about the role of Poynter as a global leader in journalism.
Plans, writes, tracks, analyzes and optimizes email marketing campaigns. Uses Poynter’s customer database and marketing automation tools (Salesforce and Pardot) to target messages, performs A/B testing and marketing automate campaigns.
Ensures the integrity of email campaigns by proofreading content, checking HTML links, managing lists -- including opt-out lists -- and meeting CAN-SPAM Act requirements.
Writes and edits promotional marketing copy for social media, digital, video and print. This includes content on the Institute’s website, such as branding and identity content, seminar and curriculum promotion pages, Coffee Break courses and articles that tell the story of Poynter teaching.
Attends and contributes to meetings to plan marketing communications and brainstorm ideas.
Writes and publishes news releases.
Writes marketing materials and member communications with outside organizations that contract with Poynter for agency work.
Meets deadlines with work that supports the Institute’s overall goals and brand standards.
Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: The Marketing and Communications Writer reports to the Director of Advertising and Marketing.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS
INTERNAL: Works closely with the Advancement team, the Poynter teaching team and event services team. Because marketing communications are so public, including news releases and articles for the website, this position works with Senior Leadership, including the President, and the editor of Poynter.org.
EXTERNAL: Works with media and corporate partners, vendors, carriers and others outside the institute, including the general public. There’s considerable need for tact and cooperative spirit.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS: Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications or related fields is required. A master’s degree is optional – but considered an advantage.
Excellent writing and editing skills, spelling and grammar, with knowledge of AP style strongly preferred.
At least three years of experience in email marketing, with a strong understanding of email marketing principles, strategy and practices.
At least three years of experience with marketing and promotions, integrated marketing, strategic communications and/or public relations principles and practices or related experience.
Strong planning, organization and time management skills to balance multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Ability to take initiative and work independently to carry out complex assignments.
Ability to work with project stakeholders to identify project requirements and to follow-up with participants to assess progress on a regular basis.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across units and groups within the Institute.
Knowledge of content management systems for online publishing. Experience in Drupal a plus.
Knowledge of customer relationship management systems and marketing automation tools is preferred. Experience in Salesforce and/or Pardot a plus.
Understanding of Google Analytics, Facebook and Twitter analytics for assessing impact of campaigns.
Strong skills in general office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and a solid digital publishing acumen.
Ability to work with external vendors, including web developers, printers, media and advertising personnel, etc.
TYPES of EXPERIENCE NEEDED: Progressively responsible experience required in the development and deployment of successful integrated marketing and communications strategies for internal and external audiences, preferably but not limited to the media, education, non-profit, foundation or journalism fields. (3 to 5 years)
Experience required in the development and execution of high profile and complex creative projects and the management of those projects, from beginning to end. (3 to 5 years)
Ability to communicate across multiple platforms (web, print, mobile, video, audio, email) required — as well as an understanding of the full array of delivery systems necessary to reach all constituencies. (3 to 5 years)
PROBLEM SOLVING/DECISION MAKING: Superior organizational skills, the ability to pay attention to detail, and the ability to create good working relationships with co-workers, media and corporate partners, participants and guests. The ability to follow through on multiple projects and complete tasks on deadline is essential.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Position requires sitting for extended periods, while at the computer and answering and placing telephone calls. Requires moving throughout the building and occasionally to outside business offices. Requires ability to work duplicating machine and other office equipment. Involves pushing or pulling of lateral file drawers approximately 20 lbs. Requires ability to communicate with other individuals (written and verbal) both inside and outside the company, examine printed paperwork, carry paperwork, and file paperwork in lateral cabinets. Additionally, sitting, squatting or bending at the waist is required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Position duties are performed primarily in a general office environment, with occasional travel to conferences and trade shows. Routine deadlines, disruptive work schedule and unpredictable events.
